AWAKE, THOU THAT SLEEPEST

AUTHOR: JOHN WESLEYDELIVERED: April 4, 1742
MANUSCRIPT_DATA

"Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." Ephesians 5:14.

1. In what sense is the sinner asleep? He is asleep as to the things of God. He has no true knowledge of himself. He knows not that he is a poor, lost, undone sinner. He knows not that he is under the wrath of God. He knows not that he is a child of the devil, and that the devil is his master.

2. Being then fast asleep in the ship of his life, he is carried away by the current of this world. He is full of various and strong desires; but they are all of a worldly or sensual kind. He "loveth the world, and the things of the world." He "is not of God, but of the world."

3. Awake, then, thou that sleepest! Know thyss elf! Know thy danger! Arise from the dead! Christ is ready to give thee light. This is not the time for sleep, for the day of the Lord is at hand.

I. The state of those who are asleep.

II. The exhortation to awake.

III. The promise of light from Christ.
